Astrid's feelings for Hiccup usually manifest themselves as extreme devotion and protectiveness, as she is always the first to aid him in any situation and the last to leave him, which Hiccup reciprocates towards Astrid. It appears to be an unspoken assumption that Astrid will accompany Hiccup on his adventures, more so then the other Vikings, and will usually invite herself along regardless. On the rare occasions that they are separated by mitigating circumstances, she is shown to worry greatly about him and is always overjoyed to be reunited with him. In When Lightning Strikes, Astrid is the first person that Hiccup seeks out before leaving the island because of the lightning, and when Hiccup tells Astrid that he is leaving with Toothless the first thing that she asks if he will come back. Despite his assurance that he will return when the villagers all realize that the lightning wasn't because of Toothless, Astrid appears sad and distraught. In Frozen, she hugged Hiccup in front of Gobber when he returned from rescuing Johann and in The Eel Effect, she was willing to wait outside in the cold while she was suffering from Eel Pox for Hiccup to come back and was very happy to see him returned. These actions suggest that her crush on him is getting harder to hide.

It is possible that Astrid had feelings for Hiccup before the events in the movie, due to her immediate change in behavior during the first flight. She might have just ignored this since Hiccup didn't meet the usual Viking standards. When Hiccup was thought to be dead after he defeated the Red Death, Astrid, besides Stoick, is the only Viking to be brought to tears, meaning she took it the hardest. In "[[Thawfest]]", she did say that one thing she "always liked about Hiccup" is that he was a gracious loser, further supporting this theory. She is also in a sense Hiccup's moral guide, keeping him honest.

Hiccup and Astrid first become an official couple during the "Dragons: Race to the Edge" episode "Blindsided", as they share a kiss after Astrid encourages Hiccup to do so. In the episodes directly following "Blindsided", it is very clearly shown that Astrid and Hiccup are in an official relationship, with the other dragon riders finding out of their relationship at the end of "Shellshocked: Part Two".

―Astrid to Hiccup[src]

Astrid Hofferson (or just Astrid) is one of the main characters of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. Her strong personality usually makes her hard to impress but once befriended, she makes a very loyal and compassionate friend. Astrid rides a Deadly Nadder named Stormfly. She is also Toothless’s close friend and Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III’s girlfriend.

Background

Physical Appearance

Astrid is petite for a Viking, but is given the advantage of agility because of this in Dragon Training. She has long, blonde hair wrapped in a braid down her back, bangs that initially cover the left side of her face, and a metal-studded, leather band across her forehead. In the first movie, Astrid wears a striped steel-blue sleeveless shirt, tan cloth bracers on her arms (each bit of cloth goes between her first and second finger) with arm wrappings above them, a red skirt with spikes surrounding it and another black skirt underneath the spiked one, and dark blue leggings. She also wears a belt decorated with silver skulls with a pouch tied to it and shoulder pads. Her weapon of choice is a double-edged battle axe, which might previously have belonged to her mother.

In Dawn of the Dragon Racers and Race to the Edge, Astrid's shirt is blue and her top red skirt has less spikes on it, and her black skirt underneath is replaced with a red skirt. She still wears the same shoulder guards (this time, with a red leather holster strap holding them in place) and arm wrappings but now has red leather kneepads on her leggings. Her hair is still kept in a French braid but her bangs have been cut off in length, no longer covering half her face. Astrid has also stopped wearing kohl around her eyes.

In How to Train Your Dragon 2, Astrid's appearance is more elegant and feminine. She now wears a red sleeveless shirt with a dark spiked skirt that matches her boots. Her hair is more sun-bleached and neatly styled in a lengthy side-braid draped over left her shoulder. Astrid also wears a fur hoodie, usually cloaked over her back and shoulders along with metallic shoulder pads. Astrid's hoodie is fastened using a chain strung between two silver skull shaped clasps. The small silver skulls which decorate her belt match those used to fasten her hoodie. Her usual arm-wrappings are, however, replaced with large, thick bracers covered in fur. Astrid still carries an axe but it's considerably different in design than her previous ones. It's very likely Hiccup has made her a new axe.

Astrid's overall look throughout the franchise is heavily inspired by her dragon Stormfly. All of her skirts are covered in spikes similar in shape to Stormfly's spines. The tan spines also match Astrid's blonde hair and arm wraps. Stormfly's complexion is primarily blue with some specks of red, quite similar to the colors of Astrid's outfits.

Personality

You know exactly who you are.
―Hiccup

Astrid is dutiful and immensely devoted to her cause. She used to be patriotic of the Viking way until dragons became an integral part of Berk. Competitive by nature and highly dedicated, Astrid works hard to achieve her goals. In How to Train Your Dragon, she pushed herself to become a better fighter. After bonding closely with Stormfly, Astrid’s focus shifted to becoming a masterful dragon rider. In the sequel, she is the champion of the Dragon Races.

Astrid is emotionally driven, and as a warrior, sworn to protect those she holds dear. In Team Astrid she blamed herself for Dagur’s attack on Berk despite being fully aware she couldn't have done anything to prevent it. Her guilt and responsibility toward her family probed her to take immediate actions. In Fright of Passage, Astrid’s innate pride and sense of duty drove her to face the Flightmare on her own, without any regard to herself. Even as an adult, Astrid is willing to go rogue and defy direct orders to ensure the safety of her loved ones.

Though lessened with maturity, she can be short-tempered and somewhat of a perfectionist at times, especially true before the integration of dragons. Further exacerbated by her emotional personality, this can lead her to act impulsive and irrational. In the first movie, Astrid was solely focused on training and the war, often isolating herself and ignoring the other teens. When Hiccup began surpassing her, she grew visibly upset over his sudden improvements. Fueled by jealousy and suspicion, she started to follow him discreetly, eventually leading her to interrogate him in the cove.

Astrid grew more even and level-headed upon entering adulthood, though is still shown to be quite fiery under intense circumstances. On "Race to the Edge", she exhibited vulnerability, gentleness and was much less prone to violence; preferring capture-missions over kill-missions. She had also become more openly talkative and closer to her fellow riders. Astrid could still come across as a little prideful and dismissive at times as pointed out by Ruffnut, but she was also able to own up to her mistakes, yet again demonstrating a never-ending will to improve herself. In the following episode, Shock and Awe, Astrid pulled a prank on the twins as payback for 'Loki’s Day', showing significant growth in her playful side.

She has also proven to be greatly reliable and is Hiccup's most loyal supporter. Her methods of encouragement varies but she rarely outright give him the answer to his problems. Instead, she boosts up his confidence and stands by him as he walks through the solution at his own pace. Her supportive nature also extends well beyond Hiccup. She has often shown compassion to the rest of her peers, and has especially let Heather confide in her on numerous occasions. Although her loyalties are steadfast, in Snow Way Out Astrid had to hold back information from Hiccup at Heather's request. She struggled deeply with guilt over it as she had never lied to him before.

In The Longest Day, due to overtiredness, Astrid suffered from uncontrollable euphoria. She became overly chipper and peppy, almost to the point of insanity, which is the opposite of the way she usually behaves.

By the time of How to Train Your Dragon 2, Astrid has adopted an optimistic and relaxed outlook on life. Although slightly cheeky and overconfident at times, she is more emotionally secure because of her steady relationship with Hiccup. Her sense of adventure and exploring is also apparent, but her ongoing competitiveness and rigid approach to grave situations remains. As an adult, she is generally more spirited and playful, and loves to goof around with Hiccup, Stormfly and Toothless.

Appearances

How to Train Your Dragon

Astrid is first seen in the film while fighting the dragons that attack the village. Hiccup, the outcast of the village tries to get closer to her, but she quickly dodges them, such as when he requests to share the dragon guide. During another training session where Hiccup fails again, Astrid criticizes him and forces him to choose a side in the war of Vikings vs dragons. She often sees Hiccup slipping away after classes, but doesn't know what. For the next few classes, Hiccup progresses in dragon combat by disciplining the dragons, getting much more popular than Astrid, making her jealous. Astrid attempts to find out what Hiccup's secret is; she catches Hiccup with his dragon friend, Toothless. She at first wants to tattle on him, but Hiccup convinces her that Toothless is different than the other dragons, by taking her on a flight. Astrid gets fascinated by Toothless' flight and even witnesses the truth about the dragons. They steal food from the village to feed a volcanic dragon that will eat them if they don't follow its orders. When they get back, Astrid hits Hiccup for 'kidnapping' her. Then kisses him for the "Everything Else".

Before Hiccup's true Viking test, she promises Hiccup to protect Toothless at all costs. But during Hiccup's battle, Toothless barges in to protect Hiccup getting himself captured and used as a guide to direct Stoick and the other Vikings towards the dragons' nest. After that, Astrid asks a disowned Hiccup why he didn't kill Toothless in the first place, and Hiccup explains that it didn't feel right for him to kill. Then Astrid convinces him that he's the first Viking to ride a dragon, sparking him to save the day. Astrid even assists in teaching the Viking classmates to be gentle with the dragons. She helps battle the volcanic dragon, along with the Viking classmates. But when Hiccup gets seemingly killed in an explosion, she and everyone else see that Toothless wrapped him under his wing.

Astrid then appears the congratulation of Hiccup, who has lost his foot. She hits Hiccup for scaring her, then kisses him on the lips for saving the Vikings and the dragons. She and Hiccup are now a loving couple and they both fly dragons together.

Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon

Astrid and Stormfly are helping put out a fire that is raging through the home of Gobber, along with Hiccup, Fishlegs, Snotlout and their dragons. She listens as Gobber argues with Stoick over the cause of the fire: Gobber's underpants or the Boneknapper. When Gobber prepares to depart with his sheep, Phil, Astrid enthusiastically agrees to go with Gobber, when Hiccup says, "Alright, Vikings! Grab your shields."

Astrid helps Hiccup and the others row a seven-man longboat while Gobber appreciates their help and Fishlegs comments on the Boneknapper's legend. It isn't until Ruffnut says, in response to Gobber telling them that the Boneknapper is a silent killer, "So if we don't hear anything... we're dead?", that Astrid - along with all the others - stop rowing and listen to the silence. She is as startled as the other teens when Phil breaks the silence, causing Gobber to laugh. Gobber then decides to tell them about his first encounter with the Boneknapper, which involves a frozen Viking punching him in the face - twice.

Due to Gobber's distracting story, they crash and sink their boat, so they stand and listen to Gobber's second encounter, this time involving a Hammerhead Whale, a third story with a volcano and a Hammerhead Yak, and another time, involving the Hammerhead Whale, Hammerhead Yak and Thor. The tales grew so wild that no-one, not even Hiccup, really believed him so Gobber decided to prove it with a trap after Hiccup tries to reason with him, due to Astrid's prompting.

While they are waiting for the Boneknapper to try and attack a disguised Fishlegs, Astrid complains to Hiccup how they should be trying to get home and is so distracted that she, along with everyone else, fail to notice the Boneknapper's arrival, except Fishlegs. After taking cover in the trap, she tries to convince Gobber to return the bone he had unintentionally stolen, hidden inside the treasure chest from his stories, after Hiccup figures out what the Boneknapper wants. She flinches when Gobber's pants fall down and is just glad that they have a ride home as soon as Gobber returned the bone, making the Boneknapper an 'overgrown puppy dog'.

They all fly back to Berk on the Boneknapper, Astrid seated behind Hiccup, and was just as shocked when multiple female Boneknappers responded to their ride's mating call.

Gift of the Night Fury

Astrid and the other inhabitants of Berk are preparing to celebrate their holiday Snoggletog for the first time with their dragons, as Astrid is seen helping decorate, assisted by Stormfly. After Stoick makes a speech, a strange sound causes all of Berk's dragons to fly off, including Stormfly, during which Astrid questions "Where's Hiccup?".

When Hiccup arrives, everyone swarms him with questions about their dragons' sudden departure but alas Hiccup has no answers. Despite Stoick's trying to cheer the tribe up in the Great Hall, everyone is sad and disappointed. Astrid admits to her friends she'd been looking forward to spending the holiday with Stormfly but she tries to pep up by suggesting they should come up with some new holiday traditions, though Hiccup is the only one who supports her.

The next morning, Astrid tries to spread cheer with her new beverage, Yak-Nog (an obvious allusion to egg-nog) and Snotlout is the first to try it though he silently regrets it, especially since he has to swallow it instead of spitting it out in front of Astrid. Fishlegs is at first eager to try some, but awkwardly declines after Snotlout shakes his head behind Astrid's back, warning him that the "beverage" is not fit for human consumption. Ruffnut and Tuffnut refuse based on the smell alone, so she decides to go see Hiccup.

Astird

Astrid's Yak-nog

She finds him in the forge, where he's working on a new prosthetic that will allow Toothless to fly without Hiccup's assistance, as he was bothered by Tuffnut saying that Toothless can't go anywhere without Hiccup's help. Astrid thinks it's a great idea and doesn't notice Hiccup spit out her Yak-Nog after she leaves to "spread more holiday cheer".

A few days later, Astrid barely dodges as Hiccup, riding Meatlug flies over her. She shouts, "Hiccup?! Where are you going?!" and he replies, while holding onto the Gronckle for dear life, "I HAVE NO IDEA!!"

Astrid then confronts Fishlegs for chaining up his own dragon in a barn when the twins find in the hay several dragon eggs, causing them to realize Meatlug is a female dragon, and that everyone's dragons must have left to lay their eggs.

At this point, Astrid has another idea for a Snoggletog tradition: They wrap Meatlug's eggs with ribbons and secretly place them in several homes in the village for everyone to find once the eggs hatch. When they finish, they get excited when all of a sudden, one of the houses blows up and a baby Gronckle lands on Fishlegs, causing Astrid to realize the eggs explode when they hatch, and thus chaos ensues as the rest of the eggs begin to explode, damaging and setting fire to several buildings.

Astrid and Hiccup's second kiss

Astrid kissing Hiccup in Gift of the Night Fury

The Gronckle babies are rounded up and the villagers begin repairs when they see a cloud of dragons being led by Hiccup on Hookfang descend from the sky, bringing with them the dragons' babies. Everyone is reunited with their dragons, as is Astrid with Stormfly, and she's overjoyed to meet Stormfly's babies. Stoick then calls everyone and their Dragons to the Great Hall to celebrate. During the festivities, Astrid notices Hiccup and consoles him, knowing it's hard for him to see everyone else with their dragons, but says he did a wonderful thing and thanks him with a kiss and hug. Feeling sad, Hiccup asks Astrid where Toothless went, and she replies she doesn't know when she notices Toothless sneak into the Great Hall. She then teases Hiccup a bit before pushing him around so he can see Toothless who reveals he left to find and return Hiccup's Viking helmet. Astrid hugs Toothless and wishes everyone a happy Snoggletog.

Dragons: Riders of Berk

Astrid and Hiccup's relationship remains for the series, though differently than in the film. In the first few episodes, they were shown as great friends, often visiting and confiding in each other, though sometimes awkward with each other around the other teens.

Soon their relationship becomes more apparent, such as in Heather Report Part I and Heather Report Part II, where Hiccup and Astrid had planned to meet. When he forgot and accidentally hung out with Heather instead, Astrid was jealous despite her denying the fact.

Later, in the episode Thawfest, Astrid mentions that she had liked the fact that Hiccup was a gracious loser, and when he makes it up to her she kisses him again.

In the episode Breakneck Bog, Astrid convinces the other teens to stay and help Hiccup retrieve his chest that was from his mother that was stolen by the "Fog Monster", when they were about to leave in fear. She does this by telling them to "put yourself in his shoes" and asking them "What if it was your mother?", proving that she cares deeply about Hiccup's situation.

Hiccup and Astrid have also been shown to be far more willing to "share" dragons, with Hiccup riding on Stormfly with Astrid when Toothless leaves to search for an old foe in What Flies Beneath and Astrid accompanying Hiccup on Toothless after Heather tried to steal Stormfly in Heather Report Part I.

Astrid hiccup thawfest kiss

Their first kiss of the TV series sequel to the film.

She was also very vocal in her defense of Hiccup in What Flies Beneath when Snotlout made various insensitive comments about Hiccup's role in depriving Toothless of the ability to fly solo, and almost going over to beat him up before Hiccup stopped her.

Dragons: Defenders of Berk

In Live and Let Fly Astrid encouraged Hiccup to defy his father's ban on flying. She then defended Berk against Alvin and his Outcast's attack.

Later in the The Night and the Fury Astrid put together a survival test that involved most of the other Dragon Trainers surviving on Dragon Island without their dragons.

In Tunnel Vision Astrid and Snotlout picked up water to help Berk when the well went dry. Later, Astrid defended Berk when Whispering Deaths, along with the Screaming Death, attacked. She and the others were able to fight them off.

In Fright of Passage Astrid redeemed her family's honor when Aurvandil's Fire and the Flightmare returned ten years after it had shamed her uncle "Fearless" Finn Hofferson by freezing him with fear. Astrid and Hiccup then learned that the Flightmare paralyzed it's victims by spraying a mist at them. Astrid, Hiccup, Fishlegs and their dragons then figured that the Flightmare was following glowing algae in the river. The three of them and their dragons then cut a new path away from the village. They were also able to use the algae by having their dragons eat and blind the Flightmare and lead it away from Berk.

Dawn of the Dragon Racers

In a flashback during which most of the short takes place, Astrid and the other Dragon riders are catching sheep who are running around Berk, which turns into a competition to collect as many sheep as possible. When Hiccup is made acting chief by Stoick in his absence, Astrid persuades Hiccup to continue Dragon Race as it is a great way to blow off steam. During one race, when Astrid and Snotlout are heading for the black sheep, due to neither of them backing off, they violently collide, resulting in Astrid breaking her left arm and rendering her unable to participate.

When Stoick returns and finds out that Hiccup has replaced the Regatta with Dragon Racing (for the good of the people), Stoick proceeds with the Dragon Race and appoints Astrid as the referee for the first annual Berk Dragon Race. After Team Snotnuts' (Snotlout, Ruffnut and Tuffnut) "black" sheep is revealed to be just a sheep coated with black paint and Team Hiclegs (Hiccup and Fishlegs) brings home the real black sheep, Astrid announces a reversal in which Team Hiclegs is declared as the winner.

Astrid is first seen in the beginning of the film, where she participates in dragon racing with her friends on Berk, during which she emerges victorious. During the race, Hiccup's father Stoick happily refers to her as "My future daughter-in-law," which suggests that he wishes them to get married. After winning the race, she then almost immediately flies off to find Hiccup and Toothless, eventually catching up with them on an island in the remote areas of Berk (which Hiccup has labeled Itchy Armpit). Hiccup reveals to her that he has been avoiding his father who has pressured him to become Chief. The news of Hiccup becoming Chief makes Astrid overly excited, but Hiccup is unsure if he is ready to take on such a duty. As Hiccup begins to doubt himself, claiming he is not like his father and hasn't met his mother since he was a baby, Astrid tells Hiccup what he is searching for is not out there, but inside himself.

After discovering the destroyed fortress of Eret, Son of Eret, and hearing about the tyrannical Dragon God by the name of Drago Bludvist, they fly back to Berk to inform Stoick of what they have heard and witnessed. Stoick then orders the villagers to fortify and protect the island from a potential attack as Hiccup chases after him in a desperate attempt to reason with him, with Astrid following them. Astrid persuades Hiccup not to go back to Eret, only for Hiccup to give her a light kiss on her cheek before flying off on Toothless as the hangar doors are closing. Astrid flies off on Stormfly to catch up with Hiccup, barely managing to fly through the closing doors, seconds before they shut. They return to Eret to try to stop him from capturing dragons. Just then, Stoick and other dragon riders catch up to them, and Hiccup decides to go find Drago himself to try to reason with him. After he flies off on Toothless, Astrid mounts Stormfly as she prepares to follow him, but Stoick stops her, instead ordering her to lead the riders back to Berk before she can even take off.

Later, when Hiccup fails to show back up at Berk, Astrid thinks Hiccup was captured by Drago and his men, unaware that Hiccup is actually with his long-lost mother, so she kidnaps Eret so that he can show them the way to Drago. Eret first declines, but Astrid blackmails him into taking them to Drago. The group is captured shortly after arrival and sentenced to be executed. Eret then defects and assists Astrid in freeing Stormfly. After Astrid finds Hiccup, she is relieved and asks him where he has been. Hiccup then tells her about his mother Valka and she is surprised and in disbelief to see her still alive. Soon, Stoick is killed by Drago and his Bewilderbeast using a mind-controlled Toothless. Arriving at the scene of Hiccup and Valka crying over the dead body of Stoick, she rushes over to Hiccup and places her comforting arm on him tenderly while he is crying on Stoick's hand. Drago's Bewilderbeest then takes control of all the other dragons, including Astrid's Stormfly and heads for Berk with a much larger dragon army. Astrid and the others shoot flaming arrows onto Stoick's ship to give the chief a funeral. She then listens as Hiccup declares that he will continue his father's legacy and that they will go back to Berk, defeat Drago, and rescue Toothless and the other dragons. They fly back to Berk riding on baby Scuttleclaws, who are immune to the Bewilderbeast's control.

During the final battle against Drago and his Bewilderbeast, Astrid cheers Hiccup on as he and Toothless face off against the evil Dragon God. After Hiccup and Toothless return the dragons back to their side and defeat Drago and his Bewilderbeast, Astrid is happily reunited with Stormfly and hugs her. She walks over to Hiccup, happy to see what he has finally found, reminding him that it was inside himself what he had been searching for, as she had told him earlier. She teasingly pokes his chest, causing the glide fin on his back to pop out, and they both laugh. Hiccup then pulls Astrid into another kiss, saying, "Come here, you." After the kiss, she celebrates as Hiccup is coronated the new Chief of Berk.

Relationships

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III

There will always be a Hiccup and Astrid. Always.
―Hiccup
Kiss1

First kiss with Hiccup

At first, Astrid is shown to be disinterested in romance - due to her sole focus on improving her fighting skills. However, whilst the other Vikings actively ridicule Hiccup, Astrid seems more weary of him, only becoming angry with him due to his inability to focus in the Arena. Her dislike for him grows into jealously when he becomes more skilled at 'fighting' dragons than she is. Despite the initial problems in their relationship, Astrid later grows to where Hiccup becomes her main love interest as she kisses him twice (albeit after punching him on the arm both times). Beyond the romantic elements of their relationship, Astrid and Hiccup are the closest human friends that either has.

The kiss

Astrid kissing Hiccup

In the "Riders of Berk" series they appear to have a budding relationship, but they are quite shy and awkward about it. Their romantic attachment is more suggested in their dynamic and interaction then out rightly stated. Whilst Astrid maintains more of her initial stern, authoritative demeanor with the other Vikings, she opens up more when alone with Hiccup, and apparently feels safe showing a considerably softer, more whimsical side of her personality to him. The two are incredibly close, with Astrid acting as Hiccup's confidant when he needs advice on personal problems, and often pair off from the others when needing to achieve something especially difficult.

In "Thawfest", she said that the one thing she "always liked about Hiccup" is that he was a gracious loser, further supporting this theory. She is also in a sense Hiccup's moral guide, keeping him honest.

In "Gift of the Night Fury" Astrid remains a close friend of Hiccup, as Astrid and Hiccup both advocate the idea to make up new holiday traditions to cheer the tribe up, and they discuss the prosthetic Hiccup makes for Toothless so the Night Fury can fly on his own. Astrid comforts Hiccup when he's missing Toothless, and even kisses him on the lips and hugs him. She still likes to tease Hiccup however, as she did with him when she noticed Toothless had entered the Great Hall, before she giddily turned him around so he could see Toothless was back.

Astrid and Hiccup kissing HTTYD2

By the time of the sequel, Astrid and Hiccup are a full-on established longtime couple and possibly even betrothed. She even teases him in an affectionate manner, and calls him 'babe' when they are fighting Drago's army. They are comfortable sitting very close to each other, as opposed to in Animal House  when they nervously moved away from each other. They are even so close that Astrid casually braids Hiccup's hair. Astrid also helps Hiccup in personal problems he can't figure out on his own. Also, she has displayed greater loyalty, trust and protectiveness towards Hiccup, just like Valka throughout the movie. They exchange two cheek kisses and a big kiss on the lips at the end.

Stormfly

Much like the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless, Stormfly seems to be Astrid's best dragon friend.

Astrid first met her in the arena as a training dragon. She hit the Deadly Nadder with Hiccup's shield, but Stormfly still let Astrid ride her in the battle against the Red Death. Afterwards, Stormfly became Astrid's dragon. The two are very close and have similar personalities. Both are competitive, beautiful, and can be somewhat violent occasionally. Stormfly is not adverse to having other people ride her besides her Rider. Still, she's very loyal to Astrid, and is protective as well. Astrid seems to have lots of confidence in her dragon as she says in How to Pick Your Dragon that even though she's beautiful, she's still very tough. In Night of the Hunters, Part 1, when Stormfly was captured by the Dragon Hunters, Astrid showed deep concern and fierce determination to get her dragon back.

In How to Train Your Dragon 2, they both continue to maintain a close, loving bond with each other.

Parents

Astrid's parents were first mentioned on Dragons: Race to the Edge, Season 1 but have not made any appearances in the franchise thus far. Astrid appears to care deeply for her parents and often worries over their safety. In "Team Astrid", she took it up on herself to find a way to protect them from incoming danger.

Sneaky

Sneaky is a Terrible Terror that Astrid trained in Worst in Show. She has a good friendship with Sneaky as she trained him for stealth.

Toothless

In How to Train Your Dragon, Astrid and Toothless are both hostile to each other during their first meeting, which ends with Astrid fleeing the scene. In an attempt to change Astrid's mind about dragons, Toothless reluctantly agrees to help Hiccup kidnap her. With their first encounter still afresh in mind, Toothless decides to take her for a spin as soon as she seats herself on top of him. It's only after she voices her apology to Hiccup that Toothless slows down and ascends into the skies, offering her a new perspective of the world. Overridden by joyous realization and taken aback by the beauty of it all, Astrid smiles for the first time in the movie. She then proceeds to tell Toothless he is amazing, making him smile back at her.

Toothless and Astrid bond over their mutual affection for Hiccup and greatly appreciate each other's presence in his life. In Gift of the Night Fury, during Snoggletog, Astrid is ecstatic to see Toothless return and reunite with Hiccup. Five years later, in How to Train Your Dragon 2, Toothless gives Astrid a big tongue-lolling smile when she arrives on Itchy Armpit. As he runs up to her, she gives him a loving scratch under his chin, showing they have developed a close and comfortable relationship. Astrid also makes a mention of riding Toothless for Hiccup once Hiccup becomes too busy with his Chiefly duties, implying she has flown Toothless before.

In Out of the Frying Pan, Toothless attempted to save Astrid when she was trapped inside the volcano.

Heather

Heather is one of the few people Astrid is the closest to despite the fact that they started off as rivals. They first became best friends after Heather reunited with Astrid again in Race to the Edge and was now a warrior just like Astrid. Heather has also played an active part in urging Astrid to express her feelings for Hiccup.

In Heather Report, Part 1, Astrid initially believed Heather about being attacked by pirates like everyone else, but her suspicions quickly rose after seeing Heather sneaking around in middle of the night and continued to grow as Heather became more and more interested in the Dragon Manual. Astrid eventually discovered Heather was working with the Outcasts but her friends remained unconvinced. Heather also caused strains in Astrid's relationship with both Hiccup and Stormfly which made Astrid all the more hostile to her. She finally had a change of heart after she disguised as Heather to go undercover to Outcast Island where she discovered that Heather was being blackmailed by Alvin. Astrid ended up saving Heather's parents with the help of the riders and Heather herself, and the girls parted ways on friendly terms.

In Have Dragon Will Travel, Part 1, they stumbled into each other again nearly three years later and Heather ended up trapping Astrid and Stormfly in a cave. While angry at first, Astrid was quickly won over by the revamped version of Heather after she explained her actions. She especially loved how much more of a fighter Heather had become, and was extremely impressed by her battle axe, wanting one for herself. In Have Dragon Will Travel, Part 2, Astrid and Heather spent time together bonding over throwing axes as well as having some "girl talk." When Heather decided to leave Dragon's Edge, Astrid was saddened to lose a friend and tried to convince her to stay.

Astrid initially felt betrayed by Heather in Night of the Hunters, Part 1 when she saw her former friend working with the Dragon Hunters. Her rage was however short-lived as it turned out Heather was merely spying on the Dragon Hunters. Heather managed to convince Astrid about keeping her intentions a secret from the others. They secretly stayed in touch for a while before meeting up again in Snow Way Out where Heather supplied Astrid with information on the Dragon Hunters' targets and their leader, Viggo Grimborn. Astrid later admitted to the other Dragon Riders about their plan. By the time of Maces and Talons, Part 1, Astrid grew very concerned about Heather's role as a spy and wanted to pull her out. When Viggo figured out she was a spy, Astrid feared what the Hunters would do to Heather. In Maces and Talons, Part 2, she was very happy that Heather managed to escape.

After Heather officially joins the riders, she ends up moving into Astrid's hut to live with her. She was so close with Heather that Heather knew about Hiccstrid before the other riders.

Stoick the Vast

In the first movie, Stoick acted protective of Astrid when he ushered her away from danger and shielded her against the Monstrous Nightmare in the kill ring. It was later on revealed in Team Astrid that Stoick relates to Astrid quite a bit and can see himself in her. She is also the first person Stoick looks to in regards of Hiccup.

In Burning Midnight it was mentioned that Astrid was considered a daughter that Stoick and Valka had dreamed of and wanted. In How to Train Your Dragon 2 while Dragon Racing was going on, Stoick yelled when Astrid won "That's my future daughter in law!" This means he is proud of her as if she was his real daughter. The exact meaning of calling her his daughter in law it could be interpreted that he is simply looking forward to his son's girlfriend becoming something more, or it could literally mean what Stoick said that Astrid is going to be his future daughter-in-law, which would mean that Hiccup and Astrid are going to get married.

Astrid was greatly saddened when Stoick died, and fired a flaming arrow onto Stoick's ship to honor her chieftain.

Gobber the Belch

In Fright of Passage, when Astrid was a small child, she wanted to get revenge on the Flightmare for turning her "fearless" uncle into a frozen one. However she was stopped by Gobber because she would need "more than that wee axe". Gobber is shown to be somewhat friendly with Astrid, regardless of the situation.

Valka

Astrid was surprised to learn Hiccup's mother was alive and looked positively awed when she saw her on top Cloudjumper taking control of all the dragons.

There was little interaction between Astrid and Valka in How to Train Your Dragon 2, but they appear to get along well in Dragons: Rise of Berk. They often train dragons together and give one another compliments. Valka is also openly supportive of Hiccup's relationship with Astrid and even offers them relationship advice.

After witnessing a quarrel between the young couple one morning, Valka voices her concerns to Gobber. She is worried Hiccup and Astrid will make the same mistakes as she did in her relationship with Stoick. She even attempts to talk to Hiccup and Astrid about it but they inform her they have already made amends since morning and are off to a picnic on Perilous Paradise island now. Valka quickly learns the young riders have good communication and don't hold grudges against each other for long, and decides then to never interfere again. (Dragons: Rise of Berk)

In Breakneck Bog, Astrid supported Hiccup's search for the long-lost gift from Valka that was on Breakneck Bog and encouraged the other teens to help.

Snotlout Jorgenson

Astrid seems to be appalled by Snotlout and his advances for the majority of the time. While Snotlout on the other hand has had a crush on her for years and is constantly trying to win her over. It isn't until they are adults they start to get along as friends.

In When Lightning Strikes, when Snotlout suggested that they build a big statue of himself as Thor and kissed his own biceps Astrid was shown to be disgusted. Likewise in Appetite for Destruction, she appeared to find the thought of kissing Snotlout repulsive. After she lost a bet against Hiccup about the airmail system in which case she had to kiss Snotlout on the lips, she went back on her word and instead threatened Hiccup when he teased her about it. In Total Nightmare, when Snotlout said that Hookfang must have picked up a few pointers from his master in regard to being a ladies' man, Astrid replies that she doubted it because the female Monstrous Nightmare wasn't dry heaving.

Every time Snotlout has tried to get close to Astrid, she has responded with violence and disdain. In Free Scauldy she threw a rock at him and flipped him over for flirting with her. Once realizing her previous methods and aggressive responses weren't doing anything to deter Snotlout, Astrid eventually turned the tables on him by pretending that he has finally won her over. She then began flirting back in a saccharine manner, which quickly scared Snotlout into submission, much to Astrid's enjoyment.

In Race to Fireworm Island, Astrid showed a gentler side in the face of Snotlout's obvious worry about Hookfang, telling him that there was nothing wrong with caring and almost crying when Hookfang was supposedly mortally wounded by the Snotlout's Fireworm Queen. In Total Nightmare, Astrid did show concern for Snotlout when he decided to go up against a Titan Monstrous Nightmare.

By How to Train Your Dragon 2, it is revealed that Snotlout has given up his pursuit of Astrid, since she has officially been in a relationship with Hiccup for some time by this point, and has transferred his affections to Ruffnut. This has improved Snotlout's relationship with Astrid.

Fishlegs

Astrid gets along really well with Fishlegs and is able to cooperate with him whenever they are teamed up. There has never been shown any arguments between them except during the Terrible Terror training competition during the episode Worst in Show. Just like Hiccup, Astrid respects Fishlegs and stands up for him whenever Snotlout makes a jab at him. While Astrid may care for him as a friend, she has also made it clear he is definitely not her type. She seemed very surprised by Heather's attraction to him and in Big Man on Berk, she was repulsed when he made advances on her as Thor Bonecrusher.

In Edge of Disaster, Part 2, Ruffnut states that Astrid has no respect for Fishlegs. However Astrid has not been shown to disrespect Fishlegs in any episode of ''Race To The Edge'' so far. It may be possible what Ruffnut said isn't true.

Astrid comforted Fishlegs after Heather left the Edge with Dagur in Gold Rush.

Tuffnut

Astrid had almost no interaction with either Tuffnut or Ruffnut in the first movie but becomes good friends with them as they grow older. She seems to be closer to Tuffnut than Ruffnut though as she is seen getting along with him much easier.

In Night of the Hunters, Part 2, Astrid and Tuffnut fought side by side. Likewise in the Edge of the Disaster two-parter when they were forced to cooperate while Dragon's Edge was under siege. Tuffnut and Astrid quickly agreed they needed to secure the edge and save his Ruffnut after she was taken captive. While Astrid wanted to go by the book to defend their turf, Tuffnut had more Loki'sh intentions in mind. After failing to agree on one plan, they ended up settling for each of them making their own preparation and meeting up again later to decide on which idea to use. Astrid ended up convincing Tuffnut to put her plan into action first, and they managed to sink two incoming ships. Once Astrid's plan ran its course she reluctantly agreed to try out some of Tuffnut's insane ideas. They were able to withhold the hunters long enough for Hiccup to arrive back at Dragon's Edge with a group of wild dragons ready to strike.

In Shock and Awe, he and Ruffnut pulled an ill-timed prank on Astrid midair. Tuffnut explained that Astrid's the "crown jewel" and a shot at Loki'ing her is always worth it. Astrid promised him payback. At the end of the episode, she attached the twins' hut to a rope connected to Stormfly and deserted it on an islet in the middle of the ocean. Tuff and Ruff concluded she was an evil genius.

By the time of the latter seasons, Astrid and Tuffnut are willing to meet each other halfway. Tuffnut has even started giving Astrid nicknames such as A and Hoff, demonstrating that is on friendly terms with her.

Ruffnut

Astrid's relationship with Ruffnut starts off a little less solid. In the first movie they are often paired up together during training sessions and Ruffnut even comments that Astrid can do better than Hiccup. It is however later revealed that Ruffnut and Astrid aren't particulary close and often clash due to their personality differences. They eventually end up becoming better friends, although Astrid is much closer to Heather.

In Edge of Disaster, Part 1 and Edge of Disaster, Part 2, Astrid was forced to work with Ruffnut and Tuffnut to create more defenses for Dragon's Edge. Astrid was not pleased by this and was further irritated by the twins' incompetence. Eventually, it got to a stage where Astrid lost her patience and began to berate them. Ruffnut, who was fed up with Astrid's constant criticism, began to scold Astrid for her mighty attitude and ended up mortifying her. Astrid eventually apologized for her behaviour and they made up.

In Shell Shocked, Part 2, Ruffnut hugged Astrid and appeared to be very happy about Hiccup and Astrid's relationship.

Eret, Son of Eret

Astrid: "Careful what you wish for!"
Eret: "What is this?"
Astrid: "A kidnapping."
―Astrid and Eret, after Stormfly grabs Eret

Astrid's relationship with Eret is rocky at first, with Eret trapping Stormfly. Then, when Hiccup decided to surrender himself to Eret, she showed her reluctance to be captured while complaining to Hiccup. However, Astrid got much more time to get to know Eret than Hiccup did, as she managed to capture him quite early on in the film. She shows her playful or teasing side with him, as she does with Hiccup, especially when convincing him to take her to Drago by telling Stromfly to 'drop', then, once Eret agrees, to 'fetch'.

When Eret double-crosses them and gives them away to Drago, Astrid is visibly and understandably upset, and feels betrayed. However, he does eventually save Stormfly, helps to bring down Drago, and joins the Dragon Riders' ranks.

Hookfang

She first meets Hookfang at the Kill Ring where she tried to protect Hiccup by throwing a hammer at his face. Astrid always thought like the other riders that he being aggressive and wild like dragon but later when she switch dragons she shown to bond with Hookfang. Though Hookfang did try to show some affection to Astrid but she wasn't to happy about it. Until she was riding this dragon and see how powerful Nightmare fire power to be incredible dangerous and cool at the same time to burn down entire tree. Then later she even found out about the Wing Blast as she was very excited to witness that and trying to feed him breakfast. She even rode this dragon by switching dragons once again to stop Barf&Belch going wild.

Other Family

In the episode When Lightning Strikes, Astrid says she had an aunt who was cursed by Odin. She had to pay tribute to him by sailing to the end of the Earth, but kept showing up from the opposite direction because "she couldn't find it". Astrid's grandfather was mentioned in Breakneck Bog. He told her the reasons behind the mysterious disappearances were pirates. Astrid also has an uncle named Finn, known as Fearless Finn Hofferson. In Fright of Passage, he was frozen by the Flightmare, bringing shame to the Hofferson family. He possibly passed away sometime between facing the Dragon and its return ten years later. Astrid had a lot of respect for her uncle and trained very hard to avenge him in order to restore her family's honor. In the Race to the Edge episode "Team Astrid", she blames herself for the the attack on Berk stating that she wanted to protect her family at all times. She was willing to stay behind on Berk for them meaning she loves and cares for them greatly.
