Chompers, also known as The Lapis Scarab, is simultaniously a character and artifact in the DreamWorks•Apple TV+ series, Curses!.
Background[]
Personality[]
Chompers cannot talk and has no distinct personality besides that he will do as his master commands.
Physical Appearance[]
Chompers is a blue effigy of a scarab beetle.
Under normal circumstances, it is an inanimate object, but the scarab can be brought to live with a magic Egyptian bracelet that was stored in the restricted wing of Briarstone Manor. Once alive, the scarab can be controlled by the person wearing the bracelet.
Powers and Abilities[]
Chompers has strong jaws that allow him to chew through most materials, including the magic briar in Briarstone Manor.
Whenever Chompers is smashed or crushed, every fragment spawns a new, identical scarab. This makes it very difficult to dispose of them. The only effective way to destroy a scarab for good is by melting it down.
Role in the series[]
Chompers, then known as The Lapis Scarab, was on display in the Paxton Museum.
After Cornelius Vanderhouven escaped from Tlatoani's Defense and took over the boyd of Alex Vanderhouven, he stole the Egyptian bracelet from the restricted wing and used it to bring the lapis Scarab to live. The scarb easily freed itself from its display case and Cornelius took it with him. He released the scarab in the restricted wing with instructions to damage the briar and thus weaken its protective powers, as these powers where keeping Cornelius at bay.
As the scarab did more and more damage, Cornelius grew stronger and he could take control over Alex for longer periods of time. He also used the scarab to activate several artifacts to make the Vanderhouven family travel to places he needed them to go.
In "The Inuit Glasses and the Peruvian Gourd", the scarab is officially given his name Chompers by Pandora Vanderhouven when the family is shown the damage done to the briar by Stanley. The same episode, Sky Vanderhouven uses the magical inuit glasses to track down Chompers and capture him. She puts him in a jar, but that night Cornelius secretly frees Chompers, smashes him to spawn two new scarabs, and puts one back in the jar. This way, Compers can continue his work while the family thinks he is still captured.
In "The Goodluck Bridle", Sky tries to find more information on Chompers from the museums archives, but this gets her on the radar of Georgia Snitker, who finds it suspicious that Sky is looking up information on a stolen artifact. In "Dr. Terrifico's Strength Tonic", Cornelius/Alex returns Chompers, which he has turned back into an inanimate object, to Georgia, and lies that he found the scarab among Sky's stuff to make her look like a thief. Meanwhile, the replica that Chompers spawned is still doing his destructive work in the restricted wing. In "The Lapis Scarabs", Stanley, Larry, Devi Cuadra, and Hank discover these extra scarabs and try to dispose of them, only to spawn more when they try to crush the scarabs. When Pandora, Russ and Sky arrive to help, the group captures all the scarabs and destroys them with Hank's melting pot. This leaves only the original Chompers, who at this point is back in his display case in the museum.
In "The Throne of Sargon", Cornelius/Alex activates Chompers again and orders him to take out the security cameras of the museum and open the door. Later, when Stanley and Larry need to get into the museums storage but find the keycard Sky gave them does not work, Larry spots Chompers, captures him, and uses him to chew through the cables of the electronic lock. This opens the door. Larry then stores Chompers in the hollow eye socket behind his eye patch. After Cornelius has been defeated and Georgia comes to the museum, Larry gives Chompers back to her.
