Announcement[]
Upon completion of NBCUniversal's 2016 acquisition of DreamWorks Animation for roughly $3.8 million, the company reportedly announced plans to accelerate expansion of the studio's current and pre-existing assets. The efforts included a planned theme park attraction, namely DreamWorks Theatre, announced in June 2017 exclusively at Universal Studios Hollywood.[2]
Shortly after the announcement, a special promotional statement was posted on the theme park's website:
In 2018, enter another level of awesomeness at DreamWorks Theatre Featuring Kung Fu Panda as you're immersed in a brand-new multisensory attraction. Join Master Po and the Furious Five on an unstoppable adventure of awesomeness destined to stimulate your senses, exercise your wit and unlock the hero within through the power of kung fu.[3]
Production & construction[]
The new attraction would feature characters from various DreamWorks Animation franchises--the primary being Kung Fu Panda, whose base feature (The Emperor's Quest) would be the first in a series of yet-planned presentations within the attraction. In August 2017, Shrek 4-D closed its doors permanently in Universal Studios Hollywood to allow room for construction of the new DreamWorks Theatre ride, which would open the following year in June 2018.[4]
A grand-opening ceremony was held outside the attraction on its first day of operations on June 15, 2018.[5] Currently, however, Kung Fu Panda: The Emperor's Quest is the only short to be presented at the DreamWorks Theatre since its debut at the park. Additional shorts are yet to be produced, but the timeframe of production is unknown as of 2020.[6]
