The relationships of Astrid Hofferson throughout the How To Train Your Dragon series.

Family[]

Parents[]

Astrid's parents were first mentioned on Dragons: Race to the Edge, Season 1 but have not made any appearances in the franchise thus far. Astrid appears to care deeply for her parents and often worries over their safety. In "Team Astrid", she took it upon herself to find a way to protect them from incoming danger.

Other Relatives[]

In the episode When Lightning Strikes, Astrid says she had an aunt who was cursed by Odin. She had to pay tribute to him by sailing to the end of the Earth but kept showing up from the opposite direction because "she couldn't find it". Astrid's grandfather was mentioned in Breakneck Bog. He told her the reasons behind the mysterious disappearances were pirates. Astrid also has an uncle named Finn, known as Fearless Finn Hofferson. In Fright of Passage, he was frozen by the Flightmare, bringing shame to the Hofferson family. He possibly passed away sometime between facing the Dragon and its return ten years later. Astrid had a lot of respect for her uncle and trained very hard to avenge him to restore her family's honor. In the Race to the Edge episode "Team Astrid", she blames herself for the attack on Berk, stating that she wanted to protect her family at all times. She was willing to stay behind on Berk for them, meaning she greatly loves and cares for them.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III[]

There will always be a Hiccup and Astrid. Always.
―Hiccup
Kiss1

First kiss with Hiccup

At first, Astrid is shown to be disinterested in romance - due to her sole focus on improving her fighting skills. However, while the other Vikings actively ridicule Hiccup, Astrid seems wearier of him, only becoming angry with him due to his inability to focus in the Arena. Her dislike for him grows into jealously when he becomes more skilled at 'fighting' dragons than she is. Despite the initial problems in their relationship, Astrid later grows to where Hiccup becomes her main love interest as she kisses him twice (albeit after punching him on the arm both times). Beyond the romantic elements of their relationship, Astrid and Hiccup are the closest human friends that either has.

The kiss

Astrid kissing Hiccup

In the "Riders of Berk" series, they appear to have a budding relationship, but they are quite shy and awkward about it. Their romantic attachment is more suggested in their dynamic and interaction than out rightly stated. While Astrid maintains more of her initial stern, authoritative demeanor with the other Vikings, she opens up more when alone with Hiccup and apparently feels safe showing a considerably softer, more whimsical side of her personality to him. The two are incredibly close, with Astrid acting as Hiccup's confidant when he needs advice on personal problems and often pair off from the others when needing to achieve something especially difficult.

Astrid's feelings for Hiccup usually manifest themselves as extreme devotion and protectiveness, as she is always the first to aid him in any situation and the last to leave him, which Hiccup reciprocates towards Astrid. It appears to be an unspoken assumption that Astrid will accompany Hiccup on his adventures, more so than the other Vikings, and will usually invite herself along regardless. On the rare occasions that they are separated by mitigating circumstances, she is shown to worry greatly about him and is always overjoyed to be reunited. In "When Lightning Strikes," Astrid is the first person that Hiccup seeks out before leaving the island because of the lightning, and when Hiccup tells Astrid that he is leaving with Toothless the first thing that she asks if he will come back. Despite his assurance that he will return when the villagers realize that the lightning wasn't because of Toothless, Astrid appears sad and troubled. In "Frozen," she hugged Hiccup in front of Gobber when he returned from rescuing Johann, and in "The Eel Effect," she was willing to wait outside in the cold while she was suffering from Eel Pox for Hiccup to come back and was very happy to see him return. These actions suggest that her crush on him is getting harder to hide.

It is possible that Astrid had feelings for Hiccup before the events in the movie, due to her immediate change in behavior during the first flight. She might have just ignored this since Hiccup didn't meet the usual Viking standards. When Hiccup was thought to be dead after he defeated the Red Death, Astrid, besides Stoick, is the only Viking to be brought to tears, meaning she took it the hardest. In "Thawfest", she said that the one thing she "always liked about Hiccup" is that he was a gracious loser, further supporting this theory. She is also in a sense Hiccup's moral guide, keeping him honest.

In "Gift of the Night Fury," Astrid remains a close friend of Hiccup, as Astrid and Hiccup both advocate the idea to make up new holiday traditions to cheer the tribe up, and they discuss the prosthetic Hiccup makes for Toothless so the Night Fury can fly on his own. Astrid comforts Hiccup when he's missing Toothless, and even kisses him on the lips and hugs him. She still likes to tease Hiccup however, as she did with him when she noticed Toothless had entered the Great Hall, before she giddily turned him around so he could see Toothless was back.

Hiccup and Astrid first become an official couple during the "Dragons: Race to the Edge" episode "Blindsided", as they share a kiss after Astrid encourages Hiccup to do so. In the episodes directly following "Blindsided", it is very clearly shown that Astrid and Hiccup are in an official relationship, with the other dragon riders finding out of their relationship at the end of "Shell Shocked, Part Two".

Astrid and Hiccup kissing HTTYD2

By the time of the sequel, Astrid and Hiccup are a full-on established longtime couple and even betrothed. She even teases him in an affectionate manner, and calls him 'babe' when they are fighting Drago's army. They are comfortable sitting very close to each other, as opposed to in Animal House  when they nervously moved away from each other. They are even so close that Astrid casually braids Hiccup's hair. Astrid also helps Hiccup in personal problems he can't figure out on his own. Also, she has displayed greater loyalty, trust and protectiveness towards Hiccup, just like Valka throughout the movie. They exchange two cheek kisses and a big kiss on the lips at the end.

Stoick the Vast[]

In the first movie, Stoick acted protective of Astrid when he ushered her away from danger and shielded her against the Monstrous Nightmare in the kill ring. It was later on revealed in Team Astrid that Stoick relates to Astrid quite a bit and can see himself in her. She is also the first person Stoick looks to in regards of Hiccup.

In Burning Midnight it was mentioned that Astrid was considered a daughter that Stoick and Valka had dreamed of and wanted. In How to Train Your Dragon 2 while Dragon Racing was going on, Stoick yelled when Astrid won "That's my future daughter in law!" This means he is proud of her as if she was his real daughter. The exact meaning of calling her his daughter in law it could be interpreted that he is simply looking forward to his son's girlfriend becoming something more, or it could literally mean what Stoick said that Astrid is going to be his future daughter-in-law, which would mean that Hiccup and Astrid are going to get married.

Astrid was greatly saddened when Stoick died, and fired a flaming arrow onto Stoick's ship to honor her chieftain.

Valka[]

Astrid was surprised to learn Hiccup's mother was alive and looked positively awed when she saw her on top of Cloudjumper taking control of all the dragons.

There was little interaction between Astrid and Valka in How to Train Your Dragon 2, but they appear to get along well in Dragons: Rise of Berk. They often train dragons together and give one another compliments. Valka is also openly supportive of Hiccup's relationship with Astrid and even offers them relationship advice.

After witnessing a quarrel between the young couple one morning, Valka voices her concerns to Gobber. She is worried Hiccup, and Astrid will make the same mistakes as she did in her relationship with Stoick. She even attempts to talk to Hiccup and Astrid about it, but they inform her they have already made amends since morning and are off to a picnic on Perilous Paradise island now. Valka quickly learns the young riders have good communication and don't hold grudges against each other for long, and decide to never interfere again. (Dragons: Rise of Berk)

In Breakneck Bog, Astrid supported Hiccup's search for the long-lost gift from Valka on Breakneck Bog and encouraged the other teens to help.

Friends/Allies[]

Stormfly[]

Much like the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless, Stormfly seems to be Astrid's best dragon friend.

Astrid first met her in the arena as a training dragon. She hit the Deadly Nadder with Hiccup's shield, but Stormfly still let Astrid ride her in the battle against the Red Death. Afterwards, Stormfly became Astrid's dragon. The two are very close and have similar personalities. Both are competitive, beautiful, and can be somewhat violent occasionally. Stormfly is not adverse to having other people ride her besides her Rider. Still, she's very loyal to Astrid, and is protective as well. Astrid seems to have lots of confidence in her dragon as she says in How to Pick Your Dragon that even though she's beautiful, she's still very tough. In Night of the Hunters, Part 1, when Stormfly was captured by the Dragon Hunters, Astrid showed deep concern and fierce determination to get her dragon back.

In How to Train Your Dragon 2, they both continue to maintain a close, loving bond with each other.

Sneaky[]

Sneaky is a Terrible Terror that Astrid trained in Worst in Show. She has a good friendship with Sneaky as she trained him for stealth.

Toothless[]

In How to Train Your Dragon, Astrid and Toothless are both hostile to each other during their first meeting, which ends with Astrid fleeing the scene. In an attempt to change Astrid's mind about dragons, Toothless reluctantly agrees to help Hiccup kidnap her. With their first encounter still afresh in mind, Toothless decides to take her for a spin as soon as she seats herself on top of him. It's only after she voices her apology to Hiccup that Toothless slows down and ascends into the skies, offering her a new perspective of the world. Overridden by joyous realization and taken aback by the beauty of it all, Astrid smiles for the first time in the movie. She then proceeds to tell Toothless he is amazing, making him smile back at her.

Toothless and Astrid bond over their mutual affection for Hiccup and greatly appreciate each other's presence in his life. In Gift of the Night Fury, during Snoggletog, Astrid is ecstatic to see Toothless return and reunite with Hiccup. Five years later, in How to Train Your Dragon 2, Toothless gives Astrid a big tongue-lolling smile when she arrives on Itchy Armpit. As he runs up to her, she gives him a loving scratch under his chin, showing they have developed a close and comfortable relationship. Astrid also makes a mention of riding Toothless for Hiccup once Hiccup becomes too busy with his Chiefly duties, implying she has flown Toothless before.

In Out of the Frying Pan, Toothless attempted to save Astrid when she was trapped inside the volcano.

Heather[]

Heather is one of the few people Astrid is the closest to, even though they started off as rivals. They first became best friends after Heather reunited with Astrid again in Race to the Edge and was now a warrior like Astrid. Heather has also played an active part in urging Astrid to express her feelings for Hiccup.

In Heather Report, Part 1, Astrid initially believed Heather about being attacked by pirates like everyone else, but her suspicions quickly rose after seeing Heather sneaking around in the middle of the night and continued to grow as Heather became more interested in the Dragon Manual. Astrid eventually discovered Heather was working with the Outcasts, but her friends remained unconvinced. Heather also caused strains in Astrid's relationship with both Hiccup and Stormfly, which made Astrid all the more hostile to her. She finally had a change of heart after she disguised as Heather to go undercover to Outcast Island, where she discovered that Heather was being blackmailed by Alvin. Astrid ended up saving Heather's parents with the help of the riders and Heather herself, and the girls parted ways on friendly terms.

In Have Dragon Will Travel, Part 1, they stumbled into each other nearly three years later, and Heather ended up trapping Astrid and Stormfly in a cave. While angry at first, Astrid was quickly won over by the revamped version of Heather after she explained her actions. She especially loved how much more of a fighter Heather had become and was extremely impressed by her battle axe, wanting one for herself. In Have Dragon Will Travel, Part 2, Astrid and Heather spent time together bonding over throwing axes as well as having some "girl talk." When Heather decided to leave Dragon's Edge, Astrid was saddened to lose a friend and tried to convince her to stay.

Astrid initially felt betrayed by Heather in Night of the Hunters, Part 1, when she saw her former friend working with the Dragon Hunters. However, her rage was short-lived as it turned out Heather was merely spying on the Dragon Hunters. Heather managed to convince Astrid about keeping her intentions a secret from the others. They secretly stayed in touch for a while before meeting up again in Snow Way Out, where Heather supplied Astrid with information on the Dragon Hunters' targets and their leader, Viggo Grimborn. Astrid later admitted to the other Dragon Riders about their plan. By the time of Maces and Talons, Part 1, Astrid grew very concerned about Heather's role as a spy and wanted to pull her out. When Viggo figured out she was a spy, Astrid feared what the Hunters would do to Heather. In Maces and Talons, Part 2, she was very happy that Heather managed to escape.

After Heather officially joined the riders, she moved into Astrid's hut to live with her. She was so close with Heather that Heather knew about Hiccstrid before the other riders.

Gobber the Belch[]

In Fright of Passage, when Astrid was a small child, she wanted to get revenge on the Flightmare for turning her "fearless" uncle into a frozen one. However she was stopped by Gobber because she would need "more than that wee axe". Gobber is shown to be somewhat friendly with Astrid, regardless of the situation.

Snotlout Jorgenson[]

Astrid seems to be appalled by Snotlout and his advances for the majority of the time. While Snotlout, on the other hand, has had a crush on her for years and is constantly trying to win her over. It isn't until they are adults they start to get along as friends.

In When Lightning Strikes, when Snotlout suggested that they build a big statue of himself as Thor and kissed his own biceps Astrid was shown to be disgusted. Likewise, in Appetite for Destruction, she appeared to find the thought of kissing Snotlout repulsive. After she lost a bet against Hiccup about the airmail system, in which case she had to kiss Snotlout on the lips, she went back on her word and instead threatened Hiccup when he teased her about it. In Total Nightmare, when Snotlout said that Hookfang must have picked up a few pointers from his master regarding being a ladies' man, Astrid replies that she doubted it because the female Monstrous Nightmare wasn't dry heaving.

Every time Snotlout has tried to get close to Astrid, she has responded with violence and disdain. In Free Scauldy, she threw a rock at him and flipped him over for flirting with her. Once realizing her previous methods and aggressive responses weren't doing anything to deter Snotlout, Astrid eventually turned the tables on him by pretending that he has finally won her over. She then began flirting back in a sentimental manner, which quickly scared Snotlout into submission, much to Astrid's enjoyment.

In Race to Fireworm Island, Astrid showed a gentler side in the face of Snotlout's obvious worry about Hookfang, telling him that there was nothing wrong with caring and almost crying when Hookfang was supposedly mortally wounded by the Snotlout's Fireworm Queen. In Total Nightmare, Astrid did show concern for Snotlout when he decided to go up against a Titan Monstrous Nightmare.

By How to Train Your Dragon 2, it is revealed that Snotlout has given up his pursuit of Astrid, since she has officially been in a relationship with Hiccup for some time by this point, and has transferred his affections to Ruffnut. This has improved Snotlout's relationship with Astrid.

Fishlegs[]

Astrid gets along really well with Fishlegs and cooperates with him whenever they are teamed up. There have never been any arguments between them except during the Terrible Terror training competition during the episode Worst in Show. Like Hiccup, Astrid respects Fishlegs and stands up for him whenever Snotlout makes a jab at him. While Astrid may care for him as a friend, she has also made it clear he is definitely not her type. She seemed very surprised by Heather's attraction to him, and in Big Man on Berk, she was repulsed when he made advances on her as Thor Bonecrusher.

In Edge of Disaster, Part 2, Ruffnut states that Astrid has no respect for Fishlegs.

Astrid comforted Fishlegs after Heather left the Edge with Dagur in Gold Rush.

Tuffnut[]

Astrid had almost no interaction with either Tuffnut or Ruffnut in the first movie but became good friends with them as they grow older. She seems to be closer to Tuffnut than Ruffnut, though she is getting along with him much easier.

In Night of the Hunters, Part 2, Astrid and Tuffnut fought side by side. Likewise, in the Edge of the Disaster two-parter when they were forced to cooperate while Dragon's Edge was under siege. Tuffnut and Astrid quickly agreed they needed to secure the edge and save his Ruffnut after being taken captive. While Astrid wanted to go by the book to defend their turf, Tuffnut had more Loki'sh intentions in mind. After failing to agree on one plan, they ended up settling for each of them, making their own preparation and meeting up again later to decide on which idea to use. Astrid convinced Tuffnut to put her plan into action first, and they managed to sink two incoming ships. Once Astrid's plan ran its course, she reluctantly agreed to try out some of Tuffnut's insane ideas. They were able to withhold the hunters long enough for Hiccup to arrive back at Dragon's Edge with a group of wild dragons ready to strike.

In Shock and Awe, he and Ruffnut pulled an ill-timed prank on Astrid midair. Tuffnut explained that Astrid's the "crown jewel," and a shot at Loki'ing her is always worth it. Astrid promised him payback. At the end of the episode, she attached the twins' hut to a rope connected to Stormfly and deserted it on an islet in the middle of the ocean. Tuff and Ruff concluded she was an evil genius.

By the time of the later seasons, Astrid and Tuffnut are willing to meet each other halfway. Tuffnut has even started giving Astrid nicknames such as A and Hoff, demonstrating friendly terms with her.

Ruffnut[]

Astrid's relationship with Ruffnut starts off a little less solid. In the first movie, they are often paired up together during training sessions, and Ruffnut even comments that Astrid can do better than Hiccup. It is, however, later revealed that Ruffnut and Astrid aren't particularly close and often clash due to their personality differences. They eventually end up becoming better friends, although Astrid is much closer to Heather.

In Edge of Disaster, Part 1 and Edge of Disaster, Part 2, Astrid was forced to work with Ruffnut and Tuffnut to create more defenses for Dragon's Edge. Astrid was not pleased by this and was further irritated by the twins' incompetence. Eventually, it got to a stage where Astrid lost her patience and began to criticize them. Ruffnut, who was fed up with Astrid's constant criticism, began to scold Astrid for her mighty attitude and ended up mortifying her. Astrid eventually apologized for her behavior, and they made up.

In Shell Shocked, Part 2, Ruffnut hugged Astrid and appeared very happy about Hiccup and Astrid's relationship.

Eret[]

Astrid: "Careful what you wish for!"
Eret: "What is this?"
Astrid: "A kidnapping."
―Astrid and Eret, after Stormfly grabs Eret

Astrid's relationship with Eret is rocky at first, with Eret trapping Stormfly. Then, when Hiccup decided to surrender himself to Eret, she showed her reluctance to be captured while complaining to Hiccup. However, Astrid got much more time to get to know Eret than Hiccup did, as she managed to capture him quite early on in the film. She shows her playful or teasing side with him, as she does with Hiccup, especially when convincing him to take her to Drago by telling Stromfly to 'drop', then, once Eret agrees, to 'fetch'.

When Eret double-crosses them and gives them away to Drago, Astrid is visibly and understandably upset and feels betrayed. However, he does eventually save Stormfly, helps to bring down Drago, and joins the Dragon Riders' ranks.

Hookfang[]

She first meets Hookfang at the Kill Ring where she tried to protect Hiccup by throwing a hammer at his face. Astrid always thought like the other riders that he being aggressive and wild like dragon but later when she switch dragons she shown to bond with Hookfang. Though Hookfang did try to show some affection to Astrid but she wasn't to happy about it. Until she was riding this dragon and see how powerful Nightmare fire power to be incredible dangerous and cool at the same time to burn down entire tree. Then later she even found out about the Wing Blast as she was very excited to witness that and trying to feed him breakfast. She even rode this dragon by switching dragons once again to stop Barf&Belch going wild.
