He was best known for his portrayal of supervillain Lex Luthor in the Superman film series. Other film roles include The French Connection, The Quick and the Dead, The Royal Tenenbaums, Heartbreakers, Get Shorty and Enemy of the State. He retired from acting in 2004 and he stopped becoming a novelist in 2017.

For DreamWorks, Hackman performed the voice of General Mandible in Antz.
