- “The ocean is a mysterious world; humans know more about the surface of Mars than the floor of the ocean.”
- ―Grandmamah.
Grandmamah is a major character in the DreamWorks film, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. She is a Kraken warrior queen who is Brill and Agatha's mother, as well as Ruby and Sam's grandmother.
Background[]
Official Description[]
- Ruby’s Grandmamah isn’t present in her life until she jumps into the ocean to save Connor. But once Grandmamah senses Ruby in the waters, she sends Uncle Brill to talk to her and visit his sister, Ruby’s mother.[1]
Personality[]
Grandmamah was quite controlling of her daughter Agatha, and was the reason the latter abandoned the Royal Kraken throne after she ended the original War between Mermaids and Krakens, simply to get away from her. She employs the same method again on Ruby to get her to ascend to the throne, which she ultimately rejects due to wanting to live her life as a normal teenager. While she still insists on getting Ruby to ascend to the throne after the issue with Chelsea/Nerissa is dealt with, she allows Agatha to raise Ruby her way without Grandmamah interfering (as in her words: "Mothers know best"), which is implied at the end with Ruby and Agatha taking up the role of Oceanside's protectors.
Additionally, Grandmamah holds her negative opinion about humans due to the fact that humans love the very evil Mermaids and think of the heroic Krakens as shipwrecking monsters, especially in the trailers, and occasionally questions why her daughter and granddaughter seem to have a fondness for them. While the humans of Oceanside eventually start to wisen up a bit once they see Chelsea turn into the fearsome Nerissa and attack the town for real, it wasn't enough to change Grandmamah's opinion of them as a whole, though at least they're now treated more as protectors of the seas.
Nonetheless, she cherishes her family as the movie progresses; when Agatha intends on facing off against her reemerged arch-nemesis Queen Nerissa alone as payback for hurting Ruby, Grandmamah makes a surprise appearance in the surface water battle herself, with the intent of defending her daughter and granddaughter.
Physical Appearance[]
Grandmamah is a gigantic green kraken and has 8 tentacles (2 arms and 6 legs) with 4 fingers on each and lime glowing skin.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Body armour: Grandmamah showed Ruby her protective bright gold body armour that she uses to protect herself.
- Laser eyes: When Grandmamah tells Ruby to see what she's got, Ruby discovers that she too has laser eyes, which are actually just electrically charged bioluminescence. Ruby's grandmother does say that, "They do pack a wallop", meaning that the laser eyes are a good arsenal to have in battle.
- Super speed: Grandmamah can be seen using super speed in the film's trailer. When Grandmama used super speed, she was showing it to Ruby at her place.
