- ―Incantation to reanimate Hank[src]
Hank is a recurrent character in the DreamWorks•Apple TV+ series, Curses!.
Background[]
Personality[]
Hank may look menacing at first, but is actually quite friendly and simply wants company.
He cannot talk but only communicate through gestures. Somehow, Stanley and Larry always perfectly understand him.
Physical Appearance[]
He is a mechanical creature whose body is made up of various different objects, including an anvil for a head, bellows for lungs, a melting pot in his abomen, a mace for a left hand and a hammer for a right hand.
Role in the series[]
Not much is known about Hank's history other than that he was cursed by an angry blacksmith; something that is still a sore point for him. What exactly this curse is, is never revealed, though it implies that Hank may have been human once and his current appearance is due to this curse.
At some point, the objects forming Hank's body came into the possession of Cornelius Vanderhouven. When Horus Vanderhouven, Pandora Vanderhouven, Sky Vanderhouven, Larry, and Stanley used the memroy box, they were send back to the day Cornelius reanimted Hank. They witness how Cornelius puts the parts together and then uses an incantation from a book to bring Hank to life. When Cornelius notices the intruders, he orders Hank to attack them. In their hurry to escape from Hank, Russ, Sky and Pandora accidentally travel to another memory while leaving Larry and Stanley behind.
When Russ, Pandora, and Sky return to the memory to get Stanley and Larry back, they find Hank giving Larry a beard trim, and thus learn Hank is not evil. Pandora apologizes to him. When the group leaves, Hank actually seems sad to see them go.
Upon returning to the present, Stanley and Larry wonder if Hank is still somewhere in the manor, since they never encountered him before. They decide to try and find him.
In "The Ruby Hourglass & the Obsidian Sphere", Hank comes to the protagonists' aid when they are fighting a spider-monster that emerged from Tlatoani's Defense, but the creature easily defeats Hank and breaks him apart.
In Season 2, Hank has been restored and has become a permanent keeper of the restricted wing alongside Larry and Stanley.
In "The Lantern" he is seen cleaning up the Egyptian wing after someone trashed the place, though he claims it wasn't his doing as he was locked in the armory when it happened. In "The Persian Die Block", he helps Larry with his inventarisation of the doll section, where they discover the eponyjous die block has gone missing.
In "The Ottoman Ship Helm", while Larry is away with the Vanderhouvens, Stanley and Hank bond over their love for music.
In "The Goodluck Bridle", Hank is initially absent but eventually shows up and frees Stanley and Larry from the dog cage they had been locked in by the mysterious intruder they where hoping to catch. Larry wants to know where Hank has been, but receives no answer.
In "Dr. Terrifico's Strength Tonic", Devi Cuadra meets Hank after Pandora and Russ are shrunk by the cursed tonic. Along with Hank, Devi saves them from the lizard Linda, and Hank is instructed to bring Linda back upstairs.
In "The Lapis Scarabs", Hank participates in the hunt for the Lapis scarabs. Eventually, he and Pandora discover that the melting pot in Hank's body proves essential to defeating the scarabs, which multiply if they are smashed but can be destroyed by melting them down.
At the end of "The Throne of Sargon", Larry reveals Hank has a talent for gardening. It is thanks to him that the briar in the restricted wing, which had been damaged by the lapis scarabs, is already growing back fast.
