- “Curses we can handle. The Feds? That’s a whole other kettle of fish.”
- ―Margie[src]
Margie is a recurrent character in the DreamWorks•Apple TV+ series, Curses!. She is a professional aviator and a good friend of the Vanderhouven family, who consider her part of the family.
Background[]
Personality[]
Margie can be quite eccentric at times and is not easily scared or surprised. This was best seen when she met Stanley and Larry, and treated them like it was just a normal occurance.
She has a deep affection for her private plane, whom she named Old Rufus, refers to by male nouns, and frequently talks about as if it is a living creature. Seeing Rufus in danger is one of the rare things that can genuinely unnerve her.
Physical Appearance[]
Margie is a short, stout, caucasian woman with greying hair. She is quite strong, being able to armwrestle two opponents at once.
Role in the series[]
Margie has been friends with the Vanderhouven family since before the start of the series. In her debute episode she recalls how she once brought them to Iceland. She usually keeps her plane, Old Rufus, at the docks. To get supplies for her plane, she frequently challenges people to arm wrestling matches. When first seen in "The Baboon Temple", she has just defeated two men simultaniously, and thus won a crankshaft and a case of motoroil.
In "The Baboon Temple", Sky Vanderhouven, Horus Vanderhouven, and Pandora Vanderhouven need her to bring them to The Congo, since they are transporting an sentient baboon statue head named Fangs which they cannot bring with them on a commercial flight. Despite the poor state that Old Russ is in, they make it to The Congo. Maggie does not accompany the group on their trip to the Baboon Temple however as she has to make repairs to the plane. At the end of the episode, she flies the family back home.
She returns in "The Celtic Cloak", in which she flies the Vanderhouven family to an island near Scotland. As they approach, the plane is caught in a storm and crashes on the shore. Margie spends most of the episode fixing the damage and thus misses out on the adventure again, but she does catch a glimpse of Maeve and some other selkies, which she admits even she finds surprising. She almost loses her plane when the tide comes in and the plane is dragged off the beach by the current, but thanks to a group of selkies the plane is returned to Margie. When they fly home, Margie begins to question what is going on with the Vanderhouven's, but they keep her in the dark about the family curse.
In "The Memory Box", a montage of Margie flying the Vanderhouven family to different locations is shown.
In "The Aztec Necklace", Margie flies the family to Mexico. Sky finally admits to Margie that the artifacts they have been transporting were cursed. Margie doesn't find this strange or unsettling, and instead is just relieved that the artifacts were not illegal.
In "The Lantern", she flies the family to Transylvania. Alex is surprised to learn that Margie knows the artifacts are cursed.
In "The Ottoman Ship Helm", she flies the family to Istanbul and the Aegean Sea. During the trip she meets Larry and bonds with him, while Russ and Pandora are amazed how well Margie takes the fact their friend is a living skull. when Larry is attacked by the ghost of an Ottoman sailor, Margie promises him to fight this ghost personally should he come after Larry again. While the Vanderhouvens are out at sea to try and return the Ottoman ship helm to its proper place, Margie does some research about Larry's idol admiral Hamza Sadik. When the group returns to the harbor after failing in their quest, Margie shares what she discovered with Larry and makes him see Sadik was not the hero Larry believed him to be, and what Larry truly needs to do with the ship helm; he has to return it to the wreck of Sadik's ship.
In "The Rajasthani Puppet", she flies the family to India. When Alex has another blackout while looking into the history of Mala Ram Bhat's puppet, he eventually ends up back in the plane. Margie calls the family to tell them Alex is with her, and they decide to let him stay there.
In The Goodluck Bridle, Margie flies Russ, Sky and Pandora to New Mexico to return a bridle that belonged to The Goodluck Brothers. She is eager to join them in the field as she loves cowboys and riding horses, but gets more than she bargained for when the ghosts of the Goodluck Brothers attack them and take her captive. They take her to a deserted town, where Margie escapes and evades the brothers until she can steal one of their horses. As she rides off, the two brothers that still have their horses follow her and eventually capture her again. They take her to a canyon where they also keep the members of The Jury that sentenced them into exile years ago for supposedly stealing the bridle. When Russ, Sky and Pandora meet up with the Goodluck Brothers there, one of them transfers his curse to Margie to force the Vanderhouvens to help them. The Vanderhouvens eventually find the corpse of Ben Harwood and a sales ledger that proves the Goodluck Brothers bought the bridle. This breaks the curse and Margie is restored to normal.
In "The Didgeridoo", she flies Pandora, Alex and Stanley to Australia, and thus meets Stanley for the first time. During the journey the cursed didgeridoo they where transporting causes a flock of seaguls to attack the plane, but Margie dodges them until Stanley locks the didgeridoo back in a guitar case.
In "The Lapis Scarabs", it is revealed that Alex' body is possessed by Cornelius Vanderhouven and that he used the trips to Istanbul and India to steal two parts of a cuneiform tablet that can activate the legendary Throne of Sargon. He hid these tablets in Margie's plane to smuggle them home. He visits Margie's plane to retrieve the tablets, but can't find them anywhere. Then Margie calls and reveals she found the tablets while giving the plane a check-up, and figured they belonged to Alex. Cornelius', pretending to be Alex, asks Margie to meet him at an abandoned building, where he takes the tablets from her and steals her motorcycle to drive to the Paxton Museum. Thanks to a tracking device in the motorcycle, Margie is able to follow him there. In "The Throne of Sargon", she arrives just as Sky, Pandora and Russ are fighting the Babylonian guards that are protecting the throne and Cornelius, who is using the throne to permanently take over Alex' boyd. Margie joins the battle. Together they keep the guards busy until Larry and Stanley retrieve a Babylonian Alchemist's staff from the museum storage, with which Sky deactivates the throne and saves Alex.
Margie is last seen joining the Vanderhouvens for dinner to celebrate their victory over Cornelius. She is already looking forward to the next trip. When Russ, Pandora, and Devi Cuadra leave the table to play another game of hide-and-seek with Alex, Margie also joins in on the fun.
