- “There is always a bright side!”
- ―Poppy.
Poppy is the female protagonist in the DreamWorks Trolls franchise. She is the current girlfriend of Branch, King Peppy's youngest daughter, and Viva's younger sister. She is voiced by Anna Kendrick.
Background
Official Description
- Relentlessly upbeat, Poppy wields her positivity like a super-power! The heroic leader of the Trolls, Poppy always encourages her friends to believe that, with a song in your heart, you can do anything. Because when it comes to life, why say it when you can sing it?
Personality
Poppy is a lead, a relentlessly upbeat if slightly naive Troll whose father King Peppy saved his subjects from the Troll-hungry Bergens. Despite this, Poppy is incredibly noble and responsible as she risks her life to go on a perilous journey to save her friends. As she and her group of nine friends, the Snack Pack, face their biggest challenge ever, Poppy is faced for the first time in her life with a problem that apparently can't be solved with a song, a dance and a hug. But after some hilarious attempts at saving the day, Poppy discovers that being true to anyone else is always the best answer.
Physical Appearance
Poppy has a flamingo pink skin complexion with rosy cheeks and glitter freckles. Her hair color is hot pink that sticks up in the air naturally, with side-swept bangs that cover her left eyebrow. Her nose is the same color, and so are her eyes and eyebrows. Her ears curve up slightly, and like the other Trolls, she has four fingers on each hand and four toes on each foot. Her main outfit is a blue dress held together by a white stitch on the shoulder, with a light blue wavy spade design. She has a green headband with blue flowers, and she wears a purple and blue hug-time bracelet that opens up into a pink flower when it's hug time. At the beginning of the film, Poppy's hair is loose, but during the 20 Year Celebration and the rest of the movie, it's put up into a straight ponytail held together by a blue hair tie. Poppy's model has a unique head, and her hairstyle isn't shared by any other Troll. It's rounder and much less wide than the standard Trolls. Her dress and headband are also uniquely designed. In Trolls World Tour, her design is mostly the same, though she now wears a crown instead of her headband.
Appearances
Trolls
In the beginning, Poppy is only a toddler. She was supposed to be served to the young Prince Gristle as his first troll. In Trolls World Tour, she is 24 years old.
However, she is replaced with a wood decoy and is saved and delivered to her father, King Peppy, where she is led out of Bergen Town safety by sitting in his hair underneath his crown, resembling he is the said king. Now energetic and happy adult Poppy throws a party to celebrate the escape from Bergen Town, but this party attracts the attention of Chef, the Bergen who was banished from Bergen Town by King Gristle Sr. for the Trolls' escape. Chef captures all of Poppy's friends in the village though Poppy, Peppy and the majority are able to escape Bergen Town. To save the others, Poppy recruits a pessimistic Troll named Branch to help her.
Upon arriving in Bergen Town, Poppy convinces the scullery maid Bridget into freeing the captured Trolls. In return, she and her friends will get her a date with Prince Gristle, now known as King Gristle Jr. Bridget notices that every troll was singing except one: Branch. Poppy tries to convince Branch to sing, but he refuses. He reveals that the reason he doesn't sing anymore is that his grandmother, Grandma Rosiepuff got killed by Chef. Poppy and the others comfort Branch. He agrees to help but still doesn't sing. Using their hair, Poppy and the Trolls make Bridget look like she has long colorful hair and whispers to her on what to say.
This succeeds in getting King Gristle becoming attracted to Bridget (who uses the name of Lady Glitter Sparkles). Later, Poppy sees Creek (whom she had a crush on) supposedly being eaten by King Gristle but later sees him trapped inside the King's jewel. The Trolls steal the jewel but find it empty. Just then, Poppy and the Trolls are captured by Chef and discover that Creek has turned against them to save himself from being eaten. Creek then takes Poppy's cowbell and uses it to trick Peppy and the other Trolls in the village to come out of hiding before they are captured by Chef and the other Bergen cooks.
With all the Trolls captured and ready to be cooked, Poppy loses hope and turns grey along with the other Trolls. Branch, however, is able to restore Poppy and the other Trolls' colors by singing Cindy Lauper's "True Colors" and admitting he loves her, which she reciprocates to him. The Trolls are then rescued by Bridget and reveal to King Gristle that Bridget was Lady Glitter Sparkles and say that Bergens don't have to eat Trolls to be happy. At the end of the film, Poppy is made Queen of the Trolls.
Trolls World Tour
In the second film, Poppy is working hard to be the best queen she can be. She seems oblivious to Branch's romantic feelings toward her, even calling him her 'friend', which puts him off slightly. She sings 'Trolls Wanna Have Good Times' with her friends and subjects, and seems surprised when Debbie shows up with a letter from Queen Barb of the Rock Trolls, until her father explains the history of the Strings, the different tribes, and shows her the Pop String, explaining she and her friends (excluding Cooper) are Pop Trolls.
Later that night, she gives Debbie a makeover, a letter for Barb, and is about to go off in her balloon when Branch catches her, though Debbie flies away with the letter. Poppy believes that the other Trolls are just like them, and that differences do not matter. Branch decides to come with her, and Biggie also stows away.
They first arrive in a destroyed Symphonyville, and a woodwind named Pennywhistle explains that it was the home of the Classical Trolls, although Queen Barb showed up, destroyed their home, took their String, and captured all the Classical Trolls, something she did earlier in the film with the Techno Trolls. Poppy then realizes that Barb doesn't want to unite the Tribes, but destroy them. She then reveals to Branch, who wants to go home, that she stole the Pop String and hid it in her hair. She then makes a Pinky Promise to Biggie that she will protect them, no matter what.
Meanwhile, Queen Barb gets offended by Poppy's message back to her, believing she's making fun of her, and also the fact that she sends a glitter bomb that explodes in her face and the lyrics of the song she sung earlier gets stuck in Thrash's, Barb's father, head. This is the final straw, so she sends some bounty hunters after her: The K-Pop Gang, Chaz the Smooth Jazz Troll, the Reggaeton Trolls, and the Yodelers.
Meanwhile, the trio arrive in Lonesome Flats, the home of the Country Trolls, and discover that the Country Trolls have sad music. They try to play them what they believe to be important Pop songs, but this offends the Country Trolls, so their leader and sheriff, Delta Dawn, throws them in jail. However, a Country Troll named Hickory breaks them out, and they just narrowly escape from Clampers.
Poppy is excited about befriending Hickory, believing that this is a step to building relationships between Tribes, and Branch seems jealous. Hickory seems aware but ignores this, building them an advanced raft down the river to get to the Funk Trolls.
Later that night, Poppy brings more wood for the fire, but Branch asks if she's noticed something off about Hickory, and Poppy believes that Branch doesn't trust her. Branch denies this, but Chaz suddenly floats out of the water, causing everyone but Hickory - due to having gumdrops in his ears - to have odd visions. Feeling that Poppy broke her Pinky Promise, Biggies leaves the group. The next morning, Hickory and Branch have a talk about Poppy and Branch's relationship, and how Poppy never listens to what Branch has to say. However, the Funk Trolls suddenly suck them up using bubbles into Vibe City, and Poppy reunites with her friend Cooper, meeting his family and discover he is a prince.
She asks Cooper's parents, King Quincy and Queen Essence, to help her show Barb that they're all the same. King Quincy says no, as they aren't all the same, and Cooper's twin brother, Prince D, reveals that the Pop Trolls actually stole all the Strings, and that's why the Tribes split. Poppy still believes she can make it work, but Queen Barb attacks Vibe City at that moment, and Cooper sends them out in bubbles to keep them safe. Hickory gets separated from Poppy and Branch, and Branch finally has enough and tells Poppy that she never listens to him, walking off. Poppy then sings Perfect for Me with Branch.
Hickory eventually finds her, and Poppy takes out the Pop String. Hickory begins asking her to take the String and run, but she stays. It's then revealed that Hickory and his brother Dickory have been pretending to be a Country Troll, and they are secretly the Yodelers. They fight over the String, and Queen Barb shows up, with her mocking Poppy and taking the String. She then captures Poppy and brings her to Volcano Rock City, and explains she relates to Poppy about all the pressure of being a great queen, even claiming that she and Poppy are the same. Queen Barb puts the Pop String on her guitar and starts her concert, with Branch showing up in the balloon with the K-Pop Trolls and Reggaeton Trolls. Queen Barb mocks him as being 'Poppy's Little Boyfriend', and attempts to turn Poppy into a Rock Zombie, though Branch sacrifices himself. While Barb turns all the other leaders into Rock Zombies, Poppy manages to unlock her cage, but is held still by Rock Zombie Branch, and gets turned into a Rock Zombie. Barb lets her have the guitar to finish the others off, including her father, Prince D, and Cooper. However, Poppy turns out to have simply faking, as she put gumdrops in her ears, just as Hickory did earlier.
Poppy then smashes the guitar, destroying the Strings in the process, believing that harmony takes different voices, and even Riff agreeing with her. Barb tries to pin the blame on her, but Cooper and Prince D make some music using their hearts, and soon everyone joins in. Poppy and Branch start singing 'Just Sing', and eventually they all get their music and colors back. Poppy becomes friends with Barb, and Branch confesses to loving her.
Afterward, during the credits, they all go back to Pop Village to celebrate.
