  • Ruby lifting the Prom Boat up is a reference to the 2005 Disney film Sky High, which was directed by Mike Mitchell.
  • Many of the film’s elements were inspired by the 2001 film The Princess Diaries, Mean Girls (2004), and Freaky Friday (2003). Using some of the plots of those films as direct source for the film.
  • The Jane Austen novel Pride & Prejudice was mentioned in the library. The book was adapted into multiple formats of media.

  • This is the fifth DreamWorks monster-based movie. The first was Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, The second was How to Train Your Dragon, the third was How to Train Your Dragon 2 and the fourth was How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
  • The last name "Gillman" was inspired by the Gill-man from Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954).
  • This is Pam Brady’s second collaboration with DreamWorks after creating the short-lived 2D adult animated sitcom Neighbors from Hell, which had direct similarities to the movie.
  • This is DreamWorks Animation's first original film since it’s co-production with Pearl Studio with Abominable.
  • This film’s creators Brian C Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi has been pitched to many other film studios and producers including Paramount, Warner Bros, Open Road, Annapurna, and others. which all of them eventually rejected the idea before it landed in the hands of executive producer Mike Mitchell and development exec Chris Kuser.
  • This is the first original film to be entirely made without the help of a partner studio, outsourced studio, or location.     • During Ruby's video at the start of the movie, a brief moment shows a Puss in Boots plush playing on a keyboard/piano a la Chopsticks. This sequence was actually shot in live action by one of the animators.
    • The day that Ruby spends the entire morning convincing her mom by letting her daughter go to the prom boat was May 18th, the day the Shrek was released in 2001.
    • Ruby, Agatha and Grandmamah all have Laser Eyes, which was a ability that Shrek used in the 1990 William Steig book, but removed by DreamWorks in 2001.

  • In the film, the Gillman family insisted that their made-up place of origin is Canada while living in Oceanside. Ironically, Nerissa's voice actress, Annie Murphy, is an actual Canadian herself.
