Shrek 5 was the planned fifth film in the Shrek series, after the success of Shrek the Third, although it was cancelled, making Shrek Forever After the last film in the series.
Though in February 2014, it was then announced that the fifth Shrek movie may be in production. A rumor has also occurred that Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy may return.
On June 15, 2016, after NBCUniversal purchased DreamWorks Animation for $3.8 billion, NBCUniversal chief Steve Burke discussed plans to revive the franchise, as well as other DreamWorks films. In July 2016, The Hollywood Reporter cited sources saying that the fifth film is planned for a 2019 release. In September 2016, Eddie Murphy confirmed that the film is expected to be released in 2019 or 2020, and that the script had been completed. The story for the film was written by Austin Powers writer, Michael McCullers, based on his own idea, with an intention to reinvent the series.
