We've both risen to the highest of highests it's a shame only one of us can come out on top. My combined powers of sorcery and kung fu make me unstoppable.
―The Chameleon

The Chameleon is the main antagonist in the DreamWorks film, Kung Fu Panda 4. She is a sorceress with the ability to shapeshift into different beings, harnessing immense power by stealing the Chi of Kung Fu masters and villains, and can copy each of their skills. She was also the leader of the Komodo Dragon army, as well as Zhen's former mentor.

Background[]

At a young age, the Chameleon wanted to learn the arts of kung fu and become an aspiring kung fu master. However, she was denied to train by every kung fu training hall and was laughed at by her peers because of her small size. This caused the Chameleon to grow resentful and become a sorceress instead, using her new skills to resurrect all of the past kung fu masters from the Spirit Realm so that she can steal their kung fu abilities.

Personality[]

The Chameleon is a sorceress intimidating and cunning to taking the chi of every Masters and Villains who has ever been defeated by Po or killed.

Physical Appearance[]

Chameleon has sharp teeth, green and brown scales and a long, pointed tail, Her eyes are huge red with yellow sclerae and she wears a golden crown and a green, red and white cloak, with espaliers and bronze nails, her eyes change color to blue when she takes the Chi of a Masters and Villains.

Role in the film[]

Quotes[]

  • "At last, my destiny approaches. I'll expand my rule from Juniper City to every city in town and village. From here to the Valley of Peace and beyond! They will all know the name of... The Chameleon!"
  • "Well, that's frustrating for all sorts of reasons."
  • "Bring me Tai Lung!"
  • "Bring me General Kai! Bring me, Master Osprey! Master Bull!"
  • "I'm The Chameleon. I do nothing but change!"
  • "I'm stronger than any opponent you've ever faced because I AM every opponent you've ever faced."
  • "Two against one? Well now, that doesn't seem fair. I'll have to even the odds. Master Cobra! Master Osprey! Master Scorpion! Master Wolf! General Kai! Lord Shen!"
  • "I thought we were friends."
  • "Don't bother, Po. Those bars are enchanted with some very old and very powerful magic. You need at least ten Dragon Warriors to get through them."
  • "Zhen, DO SOMETHING!"

Trivia[]

  • At CinemaCon 2023, Po's voice actor Jack Black revealed the following information regarding The Chameleon:

Along comes The Chameleon, a villain with, as Black describes it, the "totally scary and totally unfair" ability to bring back villains from past Kung Fu Panda films like Tai Lung.

  • The Chameleon is the first villainess of the Kung Fu Panda franchise.
  • She is the fourth main antagonist in Kung Fu Panda films after Tai Lung, Lord Shen, and Kai.
  • The Chameleon can serve as a foil to Po; both at a young age wished to kung fu masters and learned various kung-fu moves but were rejected because of their stature (The Chameleon short height and Po's corpulent size). However unlike Po who managed to prove his naysayers wrong, thus becoming the Dragon Warrior, the Chameleon continued to resent the rejection eventually resorting to stealing the moves of previous kung-fu masters before her as well as becoming a crime boss in the process. She can serve as an example of what Po would've become if the later let the pain of rejection consume him.
  • According to the film novelization, Tai Lung and other Masters used the Chameleon's tongue to jump rope in the Spirit Realm after the events of the film.
  • The Chameleon is similar to Randall Boggs in Monsters Inc. franchise, as both reptilian-themed characters wanted something greater in their respective lives than what they already have out of apparent social underestimation, which involves sucking any inherent essence out of others.
  • The Chameleon also is similar to The Chameleon in T.U.F.F. Puppy, who has a character replica costume himself that can make him transform into other characters.
  • The Chameleon is pretty comparable to Gabby Gabby from the Toy Story franchise, as well, as both villainesses not only originated in the 4th film of the franchise, but have also lead other anthropomorphs like them, possessed the shared goal of obtaining a certain object, and got the same fate of being taken by someone else. The main difference between them, however, is that Gabby is far more sympathetic (to the point where she finally redeemed in the end), whereas the Chameleon is much more sociopathic to an extreme degree (which makes her sealed fate rather karmic).
  • The Chameleon is the first main antagonist of the Kung Fu Panda film series to not be an endothermic animal like her predecessors were, but rather an ectothermic type.
    • Ironically, this fits well with her final state, where she's the only one among them who never changed her ways; in other words, she's fully "cold-blooded".
  • The Chameleon is associated with all four color motifs in the series: red, blue, green and gold. The latter was prior to her the "heroic" color of the series.
