Zodiac (previously titled Race For The Zodiac) is a cancelled computer animated film that was to be produced by DreamWorks Animation and Oriental DreamWorks (now known as Pearl Studio).
Synopsis[]
Zodiac would have been set in a city of anthropomorphic animals. Its protagonist was a cat skilled at knitting and determined to become the first cat on the Chinese zodiac. During his journey, he would have discovered a sinister conspiracy.
Development[]
Originally planned for a 2014 release, Zodiac would have been the debut film of Oriental DreamWorks.
Cancellation[]
Ultimately, Zodiac's production was canceled due to problems at Oriental DreamWorks[1].
Trivia[]
The Vietnamese zodiac is very similar to the Chinese zodiac except that it includes the cat as the fourth animal instead of the rabbit. There have been various explanations of why the Vietnamese, unlike all other countries who follow the Chinese calendar, have the cat instead of the rabbit as a zodiac animal. The most common explanation is that in the ordering system (Earthly Branches) that is used for lunar year, the word for used for the "rabbit" 卯 (mẹo) sounds like the Vietnamese word for "cat" 貓 (con mèo). Due to the similarities, this could make the plot of this movie rather redundant. Also, the Year of the Rabbit (or Cat) is preceded by the Year of the Tiger, and tigers are part of the cat family (just not domestic ones).
Gallery[]
The concept artworks for the movie were done by visual development artists Michael Isaak and Richard Daskas who also does some visual development paintings with character designs by William Real and models by Leo Sanchez.
